SUMMARY:Anil Ananthaswamy - \\"The Edge of Physics\\"
DESCRIPTION:

Journalist and scientist\, Anil Ananthaswamy will be at Warwick's on Tuesday\, March 16 at 7\:30pm to discuss and sign his new book\, The Edge of Physics.

Physics is in crisis. For more than two centuries\, our understanding of the laws of nature expanded rapidly. But in the last few decades\, we've made astonishingly little progress. What will finally break the impasse and get physics back on track? In this timely and original book\, science writer Anil Ananthaswamy sets out in search of the world's most audacious physics experiments\: the telescopes and detectors that promise to shed new light on things like dark matter\, dark energy\, and the phenomenon of quantum gravity (which string theory tries to explain). He soon finds himself at the ends of the earth - in cold and remote and sometimes dangerous places. As it turns out\, extreme physics requires extreme environments.

Reporting back from some of the most inhospitable and dramatic research sites on our planet - from the Atacama Desert in Chile\, to the Indian Observatory in the Himalayas\, to the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica to deep within an abandoned iron mine in Minnesota - Ananthaswamy weaves together stories about the people and places at the heart of this research\, while beautifully explaining the problems that scientists are trying to solve. In so doing\, he provides a unique portrait of the universe and our quest to understand it. An atmospheric\, engaging and illuminating read\, The Edge of Physics depicts science as a human process and\, in a very real sense\, brings cosmology - with all its rarefied concepts - back down to earth.

Anil Ananthaswamy is a consulting editor for New Scientist in London\, where he has also worked as deputy news editor. He is also a contributor to National Geographic News. He has a Master of Science degree from the University of Washington\, Seattle and worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley before training as a journalist at the University of California\, Santa Cruz.

SUMMARY:Chang-rae Lee - \\"The Surrendered\\"
DESCRIPTION:

Acclaimed\, award-winning author Chang-rae Lee will be at Warwick's on Thursday\, March 18 at 7\:30pm to discuss and sign his new novel\, The Surrendered.

With his three critically acclaimed novels (Native Speaker\, A Gesture Life\, &amp\; Aloft)\, Chang-rae Lee has established himself as one of the most talented writers of contemporary literary fiction. Now\, with The Surrendered\, Lee has created a book that amplifies everything we've seen in his previous works\, and reads like nothing else. It is a brilliant\, haunting\, heartbreaking story about how love and war inalterably change the lives of those they touch.

June Han was only a girl when the Korean War left her orphaned\; Hector Brennan was a young GI who fled the petty tragedies of his small town to serve his country. When the war ended\, their lives collided at a Korean orphanage where they vied for the attentions of Sylvie Tanner\, the beautiful yet deeply damaged missionary wife whose elusive love seemed to transform everything. Thirty years later and on the other side of the world\, June and Hector are reunited in a plot that will force them to come to terms with the mysterious secrets of their past\, and the shocking acts of love and violence that bind them together.

As Lee unfurls the stunning story of June\, Hector\, and Sylvie\, he weaves a profound meditation on the nature of heroism and sacrifice\, the power of love\, and the possibilities for mercy\, salvation\, and surrendering oneself to another. Combining the complex themes of identity and belonging of Native Speaker and A Gesture Life with the broad range\, energy\, and pure storytelling gifts of Aloft\, Chang-rae Lee has delivered his most ambitious\, exciting\, and unforgettable work yet. It is a mesmerizing novel\, elegantly suspenseful and deeply affecting.

DESCRIPTION:

Bestselling author &amp\; Emmy award-winning writer &amp\; producer\, <a href=\\"http\://www.cannell.com/\\" target=\\"_blank\\">Stephen J. Cannell returns to Warwick's on Tuesday\, March 23 at 7\:30pm to discuss and sign his new novel\, The Pallbearers.

Abandoned by his parents as an infant\, Detective Shane Scully was reared in an orphanage\, Huntington House. The only positive thing in his young life was the attention of the Home’s director\, Walter “Pop” Dix. Pop\, an avid surfer\, would take a small group of kids for early morning surfing. He was the father none of them had ever had. That was thirty years ago. Now\, Shane is forced to revisit these memories when Pop is found dead\, the victim of an apparently self-inflicted shotgun blast. He leaves a message asking six specific people\, all of whom attended Huntington House\, to be his pallbearers\, and Shane is one of the chosen. He and his fellow pallbearers don’t believe it was a suicide. That leaves murder. But why\, and by whom? Together\, the pallbearers embark on a dangerous odyssey in pursuit of justice for Pop\, and for retribution against those responsible for his death. Their journey takes them up against an unforeseen adversary whose power and influence far exceed anything they could have imagined.

After thirteen years of marriage\, Annabelle Gurwitch and Jeff Kahn have found\, “We’re just not that into us.” Instead of giving up\, they’ve held their relationship together by ignoring conventional wisdom and fostering a lack of intimacy\, using parenting as a competitive sport\, and dropping out of couples therapy. The books includes their moving yet unsentimental account of the medical odyssey that their family embarked upon after their infant son was diagnosed with VACTERL\, a rare series of birth defects. Annabelle and Jeff’s unforgivingly raw\, uproariously funny martial memoir proves that in marriage\, all you need is love - and a healthy dose of complaining\, co-dependence\, and Pinot Noir. Serving up equal parts sincerity and cynicism\, their he said\, she said memoir is sure to strike both laughter and terror into the hearts of any couple (not to mention every single man or woman who is contemplating the connubial state).

SUMMARY:Frances Mayes - \\"Every Day in Tuscany\\"
DESCRIPTION:

Bestselling author\, <a href=\\"http\://www.francesmayesbooks.com/\\" target=\\"_blank\\">Frances Mayes\, returns to Warwick's on Thursday\, March 25 at 7\:30pm to discuss and sign her sequel to Under the Tuscan Sun &amp\; Bella Tuscany\, Every Day in Tuscany.

Frances Mayes offers her readers a deeply personal memoir of her present-day life in Tuscany\, encompassing both the changes she has experienced since Under the Tuscan Sun and Bella Tuscany appeared\, and sensuous\, evocative reflections on the timeless beauty and vivid pleasures of Italian life. Among the themes Mayes explores are how her experience of Tuscany dramatically expanded when she renovated and became a part-time resident of a thirteenth-century house with a stone roof in the mountains above Cortona\, how life in the mountains introduced her to a “wilder” side of Tuscany – and with it a lively engagement with Tuscany’s mountain people. Throughout\, she reveals the concrete joys of life in her adopted hill town\, with particular attention to life in the piazza\, the art of Luca Signorelli (Renaissance painter from Cortona)\, and the pastoral pleasures of feasting from her garden. Moving always toward a deeper engagement\, Mayes writes of Tuscan icons that have become for her storehouses of memory\, of crucible moments from which bigger ideas emerged\, and of the writing life she has enjoyed in the room where Under the Tuscan Sun began.

With more on the pleasures of life at Bramasole\, the delights and challenges of living in Italy day-to-day\, and favorite recipes\, Every Day in Tuscany is a passionate and inviting account of the richness and complexity of Italian life.

***Taste of Italy Private Reception!***
Prior to the book signing with Frances Mayes\, we will be hosting a private Taste of Italy reception from 6\:30-7\:30pm. The cost of the event is $45 per person ($40 for Warwick's Cooking Club members) and includes a tasting of fabulous Italian cheeses courtesy of Venissimo Cheese\, a glass of wine\, a signed copy of Every Day in Tuscany\, a chance to meet Frances Mayes up close &amp\; personal\, and priority seating at the 7\:30 event. SUMMARY:Cherie Currie - \\"Neon Angel\\"
DESCRIPTION:

Former lead singer for the all-girl hardrock band The Runaways\, Cherie Currie\, will be at Warwick's on Saturday\, March 27 at 4\:00pm for a Signing Only for her new book\, Neon Angel\: A Memoir of a Runaway. **Please note\, with the purchase of each copy of Neon Angel from Warwick's\, you will receive one ticket for the signing line. Only books purchased from Warwick's will be able to be signed at the event.**

Cherie Currie\, with her signature Bowie haircut and fishnet stockings\, was the groundbreaking lead singer of '70s teenage all-girl rock band the Runaways. At the tender age of fifteen\, she joined a group of talented girls - Joan Jett and Lita Ford on guitar\, Jackie Fox on bass\, and Sandy West on drums - who could play rock like no one else. Arriving on the Los Angeles music scene in 1975\, they catapulted from playing small clubs to selling out major stadiums\, headlining shows with opening acts like the Ramones\, Van Halen\, Cheap Trick\, and Blondie. Currie lit up the stage with the provocative teen-rebellion songs &quot\;Cherry Bomb\,&quot\; &quot\;Queens of Noise\,&quot\; and &quot\;Born to Be Bad\,&quot\; riding a wave of hit songs and platinum albums\, all while touring around the world.

On the face of it\, Currie's is a riveting story of girl empowerment and fame. But it is also an intensely personal account of her struggles with drugs\, sexual abuse\, and violence. She and her bandmates\, runaways all\, were thrown into a decadent\, high-pressure music scene where on the road\, unsupervised for months at a time\, they had to grow up fast and experience things that no teenage girls should. Neon Angel exposes the side of the music industry fans never get to see\, and chronicles the group's rise to fame and their ultimate demise. Shocking and inspiring\, funny and touching\, Neon Angel stunningly re-creates a bygone era of rock and roll\, all the while providing an inside look at growing up hard under the relentless glare of the public eye\, and chronicling one tough woman's fight to reclaim her life.

Cherie Currie has been described as &quot\;the lost daughter of Iggy Pop and Brigitte Bardot.&quot\; Shortly after the Runaways disbanded\, the rock star landed a coveted role in the Jodie Foster movie Foxes\, and later went on to appear in a number of other films. Currie is still performing\, writing\, and acting\, and she continues to take on unorthodox endeavors. One of the most prominent chain-saw carvers in the world\, she placed in two major competitions in 2005. She lives in California with her son\, Jake.

Long before blogs\, tweets\, and sound bites\, people were telling the world how they felt in brief\, blunt bursts of information plastered on the backs of their cars. Whether they’re political or religious\, passionate or proud\, controversial or corny\, these brightly colored\, boldly lettered mini manifestos are declarations of who we are\, where we stand\, and what we’d rather be doing. But as bestselling author and noted philosopher Jack Bowen reveals\, there’s much more to the pop-culture phenomenon of bumper stickers than rolling one-liners and drive-by propaganda - no less\, in fact\, than a wise\, funny\, poignant\, contentious\, and truthful discourse on the human condition. Mixing pop culture with the ideas of historically prominent philosophers and scientists\, If You Can Read This exposes the deeper wisdom couched behind these slogans - or\, as need be\, exposes where they have gone wrong. If you brake for big ideas\, now’s the time.

Midge\, author of the short story collection\, Forgetting English\, will explain how to use verbal images and sensory details to create a vivid landscape for readers. This $25 hour-long workshop - which will include writing materials and a signed copy of the award-winning Forgetting English - will be followed by a book discussion and signing.

Forgetting English\: Winner of the 2007 Spokane Prize for Short Fiction. Midge Raymond stretches the boundaries of place as she explores the indelible imprint of home upon the self and the ways in which new frontiers both defy and confirm who we are. The women who inhabit these stories travel for business or for pleasure\, sometimes out of duty and sometimes in search of freedom\, and each encounters the unexpected. From a biologist navigating the stark\, icy moonscape of Antarctica to a businesswoman seeking refuge in the lonely islands of the South Pacific\, the characters in these stories abandon their native landscapes - only to find that\, once separated from the ordinary\, they must confront new interpretations of who they really are\, and who they’re meant to be.

Midge Raymond's short fiction has been featured in numerous literary magazines\, including the North American Review\, the Ontario Review\, Other Voices\, and Witness. She holds an MA from Boston University’s College of Communications and has worked as an editor and copywriter. When living in Southern California\, she held writing workshops and seminars at San Diego Writers\, Ink.\, where she also served as vice president of the board of directors. She now lives in Seattle\, where she teaches at Richard Hugo House.

DESCRIPTION:

Former White House Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff\, Karl Rove\, will be at Warwick's on Wednesday\, March 31 at 6\:00pm to sign his new memoir\, Courage and Consequence.

In this frank memoir\, Rove responds to critics\, passionately articulates his political philosophy\, and defends the choices he made on the campaign trail and in the White House. He addresses controversies head-on and\, in the course of putting the record straight\, Rove takes on Democratic leaders who acted cynically or deviously behind closed doors\, and even Republicans who lacked backbone at crucial moments. Courage and Consequence is also the first intimate account from the highest level at the White House of one of the most headline-making presidencies of the modern age. Rove is candid about his mistakes in the West Wing and in his campaigns\, and talks frankly about the heartbreak of his early family years. But Courage and Consequence is ultimately about the joy of a life committed to the conservative cause\, a life spent in political combat and service to country\, no matter the costs.

Bestselling author\, <a href=\\"http\://www.indusundaresan.com\\" target=\\"_blank\\">Indu Sundaresan\, will be at Warwick's on Thursday\, April 1 at 7\:30pm to discuss and sign her new novel\, Shadow Princess\, the third part of her Taj Trilogy.

June 17\, 1631\: In the southern fringe of the Mughal Empire\, an Empress dies in childbirth. By her side are her husband and her oldest child\, Princess Jahanara. This single event\, her mother’s death\, changes Jahanara’s life forever. At seventeen\, she is forced to bear the weight of her father’s grief\, becomes the chief lady of his harem\, assumes the responsibilities of an Empress without being one\, is granted immense wealth and her mother’s income\, engages in a rivalry with her sister Roshanara to put opposing brothers on the throne…and does not succeed. Jahanara falls in love with a noble at court\, Najabat Khan\, but it is a love that remains largely unfulfilled because her father does not allow any of his daughters to marry. In the end\, all these events overshadow Princess Jahanara’s life - none more than the magnificent tomb her father builds for her mother\, the Taj Mahal. Meticulously researched\, and set amidst the splendor and luxury of the world’s most opulent court\, Shadow Princess is Sundaresan’s best work yet\, a tale of a lone woman who is powerful\, rich\, omnipotent in her father’s harem\, but who fails to turn the course of India’s history\, and has to find her happiness in unconventional ways.

DESCRIPTION:

California gubernatorial candidate\, Steve Poizner\, will be at Warwick's on Monday\, April 5 at 7\:30pm to discuss and sign his new book\, Mount Pleasant\: My Journey from Creating a Billion-Dollar Company to Teaching at a Struggling Public High School.

Entrepreneur Steve Poizner has run a billion dollar Silicon Valley company\, but the greatest challenge of his life was the year he spent teaching twelfth graders at San Jose's Mt. Pleasant High School. On many days\, like the one when a student's boyfriend was arrested for bank robbery\, his managerial and entrepreneurial skills seemed irrelevant. But on others\, they helped him demonstrate how exciting it is to learn. Playing Jeopardy with the class and inviting speakers into the classroom\, Poizner motivated his students by expanding their horizons far beyond their high school's walls.

Steve Poizner is currently a candidate for governor of California and on the verge of becoming a household name. But this is a memoir of a riveting personal journey\, not a point-by-point account of his vision for his state. Poizner writes\, &quot\;Often I came to ask myself one question\: What exactly are you doing here? As it turns out\, I was receiving one hell of an education.&quot\; Mount Pleasant is ultimately a success story\, as Poizner won Rookie Teacher of the Year honors and\, more importantly\, ensured that all of his students graduate.

Renowned comic strip artist\, Jason Shiga will be at Warwick's for a special &quot\;create your own comic&quot\; session for kids and a book signing for his new book\, Meanwhile on Tuesday\, April 6 at 4\:00pm.

Chocolate or Vanilla? This simple choice is all it takes to get started with Meanwhile\, the wildly inventive creation of comics mastermind Jason Shiga\, of whom Scott McCloud said “Crazy + Genius = Shiga.” Jimmy\, whose every move is under your control\, finds himself in a mad scientist’s lab\, where he’s given a choice between three amazing objects\: a mind-reading device\, a time-travel machine\, or the Killitron 3000 (which is as ominous as it sounds). Down each of these paths there are puzzles\, mysterious clues\, and shocking revelations. It’s up to the reader to lead Jimmy to success or disaster. Meanwhile is a wholly original story of invention\, discovery\, and saving the world\, told through a system of tabs that take you forward\, backward\, upside down\, and right side up again. Each read creates a new adventure!

Jason Shiga graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in pure mathematics. He is the author of more than twenty comic books and the inventor of three board games\, two card tricks\, the greedy mug\, the bus clock\, and the world’s second-largest interactive comic\, which spanned twenty-five square feet. His puzzles and mazes have appeared in McSweeny’s and Nick Magazine\, and on the sides of buildings at MIT. He lives in Oakland\, California.

Dealing with a sick plant is one of the most frustrating situations a gardener or houseplant owner can face. More often than not\, we have no idea what is causing the problem\, or how to fix it. Fortunately\, help is at hand. What’s Wrong With My Plant? (And How Do I Fix It?) provides an easy system for visually diagnosing any problem\, and matching it to the right cure. This innovative and easy-to-use guide is split into three parts\: Part One presents easy-to-follow\, illustrated flow charts\, organized by where on the plant the symptoms appear\, which allows readers to accurately diagnose the problem. The format is so simple it doesn’t even require knowing the name of the plant\; all you need to know is whether the problem is affecting its roots\, stem\, flowers\, or leaves. It does not matter whether the plant is a houseplant\, perennial\, vegetable\, tree\, or shrub. Part Two offers a 100% organic way to fix the problem. From improper growing conditions and environmental factors\, to molds\, pests\, and diseases\, every problem has a safe\, natural solution. Part Three shows photographs and drawings of stressed\, damaged\, and diseased plants that help with accurate comparison. Whether your garden consists of herbs on a kitchen windowsill\, a vegetable garden\, an elaborate backyard border\, or a container on a patio\, What’s Wrong With My Plant? is an indispensable resource.
