Jim's Selections

Jim reads a little of everything. Here's a sampling of his latest finds. (By the way, if Jim gets behind a book, its true destiny as a monumental bestseller will be revealed. Don't be the last one on your block...)

The Kindly Ones (Hardcover)

By Jonathan Littell
$29.99
ISBN-13: 9780061353451
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper, 03/01/2009
First written in French in 2006, The Kindly Ones astounded European critics and readers enough to sell a million copies. It received mixed reviews in the US, but I have to say it's an incredible piece of historical fiction. This is the life story of former Nazi officer, Max Aue. This remarkable novel details Aue's graphic description of his personal life - with tales of incest, homosexuality, and patricide - and his role in WWII history (his horrific reasoning behind the Final Solution is incomrehensible.) Vividly told, this book is quite an experience.  -Jim

The World Without Us (Paperback)

By Alan Weisman
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9780312427900
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Picador, 08/01/2008
What would happen to the earth if humans became extinct? In a fascinating narrative, Weisman describes earth as we know it and how it would be if no humans were able to control the plants and animals, and weren’t here to maintain the hundreds of dams, canals and bridges around the world. He provides a dramatic description of Manhattan full of animals, overgrown with plants, the bridges collapsed and the city in ruins, within 100 years of our demise. Captivating and disturbing images fill Weisman’s book, an incredible page turner. His shocking chapter on “Polymers are Forever” in itself is worth the price of the book.  -Jim

Foreskin's Lament (Paperback)

By Shalom Auslander
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9781594483332
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Riverhead Trade, 10/01/2008
This is a laugh-out loud memoir of an Orthodox Jew who is coming to terms with his childhood guilt and how it effects his everyday life. Growing up, Auslander wasn’t exactly what you would think of as devout. He even expects Devine retribution when he peddles his bike to the mall on the Holy Day. This guilt, and his mother’s mantra: “Man plans and God laughs” dog him into his adulthood. An entertaining read that brings together Auslander’s life and the book’s unique title. -Jim

A Prisoner of Birth (Mass Market Paperback)

By Jeffrey Archer
$9.99
ISBN-13: 9780312944094
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: St. Martin's Paperbacks, 12/01/2008
Danny is sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit: murdering his best friend. His creative escape from Belmarsh Prison and the revenge he takes on the true killers is an intriguing and surprise-packed thriller. I was captivated by the creative plot twists employed by the author, who drew on his past experiences as a prisoner in the same London facility. Danny's cellmate, fastidious Sir Nick, keeps a detailed journal, which becomes a valuable part of the unfolding story. This is a winner. -Jim

Power, Faith, and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present (Paperback)

By Michael B. Oren
$17.95
ISBN-13: 9780393330304
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: W. W. Norton & Company, 02/01/2008
Anyone interested in U.S. history and this country’s relationship to the Middle East will be astounded by some of the fascinating accounts described by Oren. This book reads like a novel, tracing how the attraction of that foreign region enthralled businessmen, government leaders, and the public. (The US Navy was created to escort merchant ships to the Middle East after the British withdrew their protection in 1776.) Hollywood romanticized the region with fantasies that fed audiences with half truths and pure myth. Meanwhile, faiths of the east and west collided. -Jim

A Thousand Splendid Suns (Paperback)

By Khaled Hosseini
$16.00
ISBN-13: 9781594483851
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Riverhead Trade, 11/01/2008
In The Kite Runner the author follows the lives of two men during the many changes in Afghanistan. In his new novel, Hosseini describes two women’s personal turmoil resulting from the very public upheavals in the country over 30 years, from the Russian incursion to the rule of the Taliban. Laila’s life of privilege is subordinated to the country’s traditions, and Mariam was born in shame and she felt, in some way, deserved her fate. They both marry Rasheed, who demands both women’s obeisance. Laila’s hope and Mariam’s ultimate sacrifice are a powerful combination.  -Jim

The Secrets of a Fire King (Paperback)

By Kim Edwards
$14.00
ISBN-13: 9780143112303
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Penguin (Non-Classics), 05/01/2007
Kim Edwards’ excellent collection of short stories could each be expanded to a novel, one reviewer said. Her best selling book, Memory Keepers Daughter has captivated readers. Fortunately, her short stories – formerly out of print – has now been released and is a treasure full of the lives and cultures that so affect the world. –Jim

Ines of My Soul (Paperback)

By Isabel Allende
$14.95
ISBN-13: 9780061161544
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Perennial, 09/01/2007
Isabel Allende adds to her wealth of historic fiction with this incredible story about Inés Suarez, who helped conquer and rule in Chile in the 1600s. In a quest to find her unfaithful husband, Ines sails to the Americas. Her tale recounts many of the events of that time, including the search for the Fountain of Youth and the taking of the Incan Empire. Just enough history to whet your appetite, and a heart that makes you want to know what happens to Inés and those around her.  -Jim

Tomorrow You Go Home (Hardcover)

By Tig Hague
$26.00
ISBN-13: 9781592403752
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Gotham, 11/01/2008
Tig Hague flew into Moscow on business after attending a bachelor party in London. When Russian officials went through his bag, they found a small amount of hashish in one of Hague's pockets. This incredible, articulate memoir traces his bizarre journey through the Russian courts and how he ended up being sentenced to two years in a remote labor camp. His story is riveting as he articulates his experience, based on journals he snuck out of prison. Just when you think it couldn't get any worse.... This is an amazing book. -Jim
