Robs Selections
Somebody's always got to be the new guy. Rob is a Warwick's Team Player - dividing his time between the Book Department and Office Supply. Here are a few of his latest recommended reads. (He can also recommend a good cheese to go with your books.)
By John Barlow
$25.00
ISBN-13: 9780374150105Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 10/01/2008
Galicia is home to much literary and political royalty boasting names like Cervantes, Franco, and Castro. In this part of the world, though, the hog is king. John Barlow is in Northern Spain to eat pig. The whole pig! Barlow blots out portions of his pig diagram as he chomps his way through Galicia eating toes, eyes, and tongues one morsel at a time. It is always fascinating to get a foreign take on another culture (Barlow is British), especially when there is a twist (his wife is Galician and a vegetarian!). If you enjoy travel and/or food writing, give this one a read. It’s worth it. -Rob
Too Fat to Fish (Paperback)
By Artie Lange, Anthony Bozza, Howard Stern
$16.00
ISBN-13: 9780385526579Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Spiegel & Grau, 06/01/2009
Artie Lange is a mess. He is an addict in every sense of the term. His untreated affliction has spawned a comedic trifecta: depressed, unpredictable, obese. In this memoir, the sad clown revisits the touching bond he shared with a father who died before his time. We get a glimpse of Artie’s origins as a sports fanatic and his future gambling tendencies as he romantically accounts going to Yankee games with his dad. Despite his problems, Artie is a great story-teller and he is lovable in a blue-collar, New Jersey sort of way. Artie is alive today and is a regular on the Howard Stern Show (Howard wrote the foreword). I guess you can say that’s a happy ending...so far. -Rob
B Is for Beer (Hardcover)
By Tom Robbins
$17.95
ISBN-13: 9780061687273Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Ecco, 05/01/2009
Tom Robbins has an imagination that can only be explained by his apparent affinity for the alcoholic beverage. In his typical Robbins fashion, the reader is taken on a wild adventure, this time with five-year-old Gracie. Gracie is whisked from home by the Beer Fairy and taken to a magical barley field. The Beer Fairy gives young Gracie a hilarious tutorial on the process of beer-making from the fields to the bottle. The whimsical fairy also warns Gracie of the woes of too much indulgence. Finally Gracie makes her way home to the comfort of mother and her bedroom. The story comes full circle as Gracie sagely and unexpectedly passes advice to her mother in a time of instability. -Rob
By Lt. Col. Dave Grossman
$15.99
ISBN-13: 9780316040938Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Back Bay Books, 06/01/2009
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman provides an intense look at the psychology of killing in modern warfare. Grossman explores the effects of Pavlovian-conditioned soldiers and makes a compelling argument that they have a higher likelihood of completing the act of killing in combat. Grossman also touches on violence in our society and the role of mainstream movies and video games as brainwashing drill sergeants. On Killing gives insight on a topic that has not been written about in the past, and it is a fascinating look into the mind of the modern day soldier. -Rob
By Trevor Corson
$14.99
ISBN-13: 9780060883515Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Perennial, 09/01/2008
Trevor Corson studied eastern philosophy in college and lived, for a time, in a Buddhist temple in Japan. He also likes to eat. Corson’s interests mesh as he explores the origin and culture of sushi. The author observes America’s first Sushi Academy for a whole term, and chronicles the struggles of the diverse class of aspiring sushi chefs. Corson parallels the story of the hopeful chefs along side the history of this wonderful Japanese cuisine. This is a coming-of-age piece as much as it is informational about the fish varieties and preparation of sushi. Corson graciously gives advice to the reader on how best to enjoy sushi. Find a sushi bar and a chef you like and say "omakase" which means “I leave it up to you”. -Rob
After the Quake: Stories (Paperback)
By Haruki Murakami
$13.00
ISBN-13: 9780375713279Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Vintage, 05/01/2003
After the Quake is a collection of six short stories set in or close to Japan. The common thread of the six pieces is that they all revolve around the 1995 Kobe earthquake. Murakami masterfully jumps in and out of dream-like realities as his characters constantly search for something beyond their comprehension. In this existential collection the author brilliantly uses the catastrophic event of 1995 to gain perspective on the value of life and relationships. For the Murakami novice, short stories are a good way to start. For the Murakami fans, you won’t be disappointed. -Rob
By Bill Bryson
$15.99
ISBN-13: 9780767902526Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Broadway, 05/01/1999
Bill Bryson is in the mood for a walk, a very long walk. In this travel classic, Bryson records his experience on the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail which stretches from Georgia to Maine. Bryson is joined by childhood friend Stephen Katz whom he playfully describes as less than sophisticated. At one point Bryson refers to his friend as “Iowa’s drug culture”. Bryson’s sardonic humor pours over these pages as he and Katz encounter one precarious situation after another. Bryson is a scholar as well as a funny-man and he provides a beautiful history of the Appalachian Trail in this book. Read it. -Rob
By Anthony Bourdain
$15.95
ISBN-13: 9780060899226Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Perennial, 01/01/2007
Renegade chef Anthony Bourdain heads the famous Brasserie Les Halles restaurant in New York City. In Kitchen Confidential, he recounts his 28-year career through the raunchy high-drama world of the restaurant kitchen. Bourdain is as talented a writer as he is a chef and his tales of gastronome are completely free of pretense. This is a vivid account of the culinary underworld, and it doesn’t shy away from the sex and drug culture which is ostensibly prevalent. Bourdain warns those thinking about a career in food that the reality is a far cry from what you see on the cooking channel. Kitchen Confidential is a must read for anyone who has worked in a restaurant or are considering it. -Rob
